Pictures speak louder than words.
This is for Dead Weight’s print edition. Please note that my earnings are less than what I make on ebook copies of the same title.
If you don’t do the retailer’s preferred 55%… the books are generally not listed and not available. The lowest I can go is 40%.
So, when you wonder why print editions are so expensive and I don’t prioritize them, this is why.

OMG what a rip off for you

I’m in Canada. Is this the fancy hardcover you mentioned? How do I get my hands on a copy?
The Sneaky Kitty Critic
No. That’s just a standard paperback.
Melissa
Are you still planning on releasing the fancy hardcover you mentioned before? I would really like a copy, but I fully understand if it is not something that would be fiscally possible.
The Sneaky Kitty Critic
I’ll still be doing it, but the price is much higher than the paperback edition prices listed here.
Amazon is cheaper for the trade PB, but the printing quality is significantly lower.

This sounds like a continuation of a discussion I joined in a hotel bar at a tech conference. Everyone else was a published author in technical books. They were all talking about how terrible it was to deal with print publishers and print media sales. My parents were in printing and publishing, so I knew exactly what problems they were dealing with, and I could interject coherent comments.
Mostly I was there to fan-boy one of the tech writers, but I was quiet about it so they didn’t notice that I was an outsider.

As an old fogy, I clung to my dead-tree versions. Then came the day that I really wanted to read books only in electronic format. And my reading habits have not been the same since. I’m glad I’m not involved the the insane prices posted here.

Personally I have gone all-digital. I no longer buy print copies from anyone.
Correction – I buy technical reference books (numbers and charts and such) in print form. But that has no relation to your print market.
Given the numbers you showed, I’m a little surprised you spend any effort on the print market.
The Sneaky Kitty Critic
I get nagged a lot about print editions, alas.

That’s awful. It’s like they’re trying to put authors out of business, which seems shortsighted for those in the publishing industry. But it’s why I always buy your ebook first, to support you, and then the print version when available, to make it easier on my eyes.
