To master the art of keeping dangerous books, one must learn the golden rule: some knowledge should never be shared.
Bookshop owner by day, restorer of rare and dangerous books by night, Kita James is thrilled to acquire a new poisonous book from the Victorian era. From the swirling patterns on the cover to its unusual leather binding, IN SEARCH OF LIFE is truly a unique find. However, testing of the vibrant tome reveals its darker nature: the leather is that of a human along with an extinct animal from the ice age. To further complicate matters, a new radioactive element is discovered lurking within its pages.
The deeper she delves into the toxic text, the less she likes about what she learns. From the dawn of humanity, people had searched for the secrets of eternal life and resurrection. And if Lugalbanda-Alad, the author of the mysterious volume, was to be believed, he had found it.
Joining forces with Dav, a rather vocal book in her collection, Kita works to unveil the apothecary’s secret. With the right magic and a strong enough will, the forbidden lore might be able to set Dav free along with the other sentient books confined within her shelves.
But all knowledge comes at a price: if IN SEARCH OF LIFE were to fall into the wrong hands, it could usher in the destruction of all Kita holds dear and the enslavement of all mankind.

Note re: Kobo. This is a test (alongside one other test I’m doing) to see if their system (and asking them nicely to please confirm that the preorder launches out appropriately) fixes the issues. So, if you preorder at Kobo, please note that any issues with deployment are fully Kobo’s responsibility, no matter how much their customer service blames me. I have never missed a deadline for posting to vendors and do not intend on starting that with this book.
Thank you for your understanding!
P.S.: I am writing this on the side in my free time and on breaks, so this has zero influence on when other books release. Please do not panic. I just am really, really in love with this book and wish for it to fly.
Side note: I will be heartbroken if this one doesn’t fly.
Ooohh!! I cant wait!! This one sounds so good!!!
Kobo pre-order system sucks. I’ve quit preordering with them as the books never deliver cleanly. That being said it’s still my favorite ebook vendor.
my understanding is that you get the least money if i buy through amazon. last book you published i bought from the patreon store. this post sounds like you want readers to preorder now? i can preorder through amazon or apple books if that is most helpful thank you fir clarifying. that apothecary series sounds like a sure hit for me.
For this specific book, I would really enjoy hitting USA Today. That means I need preorders at Amazon US, Kobo, Barnes and Noble, and Apple. In this specific case, sales from Patreon dont count.
Patreon and Smashwords pay the best tho. :3
But really, do what makes you happy at this stage. :3
You are appreciated!
Thank you for that clarification. I preordered.
I really miss your books. I cannot read E books only paper print and I am so sad to miss out on your writing. On top of that all these wonderful new books won’t be on the shelves of my bookstore. I am in mourning for all I am missing out on and others like me who are unable to read eBooks. I hope you will offer print books again as those are the ones that last hundreds of years.
99% of my titles are available in paperback on Amazon. Ingram had priced me out. (Nobody wants to pay $25 for a paperback you can get from Amazon of similar quality for $18.)
But the books are available in print on Amazon. I just cannot set print books for preorder because I am an independent.
i just added it to my kobo wishlist successfully. and in canada 🙂
Looking forward to it. Of course I preorder it.
